So I'm Not Afraid of Cows, but They go Running from Me!

So this week was another week of the mission sao paulo leste! We had our Christmas conference, a surprise 2-day division, and a ton of other stuff. Here's the lowdown...

Last Tuesday was our christmas conference. All the missionaries here in the interior were there to play games and eat and talk with president and learn together. We played a ton of games...like, dodgeball, capture the flag, missionary tag, 3-legged race, and a few others. It was so awesome, and it got pretty violent at times....well, I guess that's to be expected with a ton of elders! Hahaha. And we saw President in shorts and a t-shirt. And he wouldn't let us take pictures, so that's something you will all never see. If you know him, you know that he is Portuguese, and is ALWAYS with a tailored suit. So to see him running around in bermudas was quite the sight! It was great. We learned a ton with him also, during his brief messages. We watched "Joy to the World", listened to some fabulous Handel and other wonderful Christmas music, and the day was just overall stupendously awesome. It was chill...we got to hang out and relax and talk with all our buddies here. We took pictures, and all that usual stuff. Hah, the night before the conference, we went to the other area of Sisters, because they live closer to where we had conference, so we spent the night at their house. Needless to say, one of the sisters who is there is one of my best friends in the mission, so we barely slept...it was the first time we had a chance to talk for more than like 10 minutes! So we were exhausted by the end of the day Tuesday. Oh, and Sister Holanda and Sister Monteiro made cake for me and we had a party at their house for my birthdya on Monday night.

Other things to report...we had a 2-day division. I stayed here in Vista verde, and Sister Holanda came for these two days. I learned TON with her about the work and how to be a better person! The name of this division was "operation: 1 baptism". So we worked for that. In the end, unfortunately, we didn't baptize this week, but we found a few people and situations that we are working out right now to baptize here pretty soon! So that was fantastic. We found Wesley, who already was almost baptized one time, but that fell through. So we are going to follow-up with him really well and hopefully baptize this sunday! He is pretty stellar, and we are going to get his mom to church too, I am hoping and praying! Anyway, other things of interest during this division. Açaí (I'm addicted), tractors, and trying to take pictures with cows, but each time I tried to get close, they ran away from me! How on earth can they have so much fear of me?! I'm less than half their size!

Yesterday was church, and no one went to church, even though we ran after everyone to get them there. That was a bummer. We even invited people in the street as we were walking to church. But I realized (again) that miracles happen every single day. Always. Sometimes we just have to look. I think I say this every single week, but every single week it is still true! I have a journal with 2 years worth of daily miracles to prove that this is true! I made the comment yesterday that I just want to see everyone in the celestial kingdom. Truly. That's why I am here.

This week will be crazy. Christmas dinners all over the place, running after 2 potential baptisms for Sunday, and watching a MOVIE on wednesday with the ward, about scrooge. President gave us permission to watch as well...that'll be odd to watch a movie on the mission! But it will be stellar. Oh, and last night, we finally got to watch the first presidency christmas devotional...and sing and hear music in english! That rocked!!!!

As for the phone call on Christmas....I am so so so so so so so so stoked! But don't laugh at my terrible english. I tried talking english on Saturday with someone, and I sounded like a foreigner, the few words that came out of my mouth. Hah. It's difficult. Thanks for all the letters and support and everything! From everyone! Wish everyone there a Merry Christmas for me, and until next monday, I will get to talk to some of you....HOORAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love,
Karen

To be or not to be...

...in this case, it is not the question but rather the answer. Today in Church a talk was given that brought up something important to me.  I am a "list person".  I have so many lists, because that is how I stay organized.  The most frequent list I make is a to-do list, generally before I go to bed for the next day (yes, I still have nightly planning sessions, hahahaha, picked that up from the mission!).  But in this talk, the speaker talked about how we like to-do lists because we can check things off as we finish.  But have we ever thought about a "To be" list?  So that got me thinking.  And tonight for my scripture study, I was pondering over this and decided that I also needed to make a "Not to be" list.  And these are lists that will stay with me for life, as I will never be perfect and will always be working on becoming more like Christ.  Because that is the ultimate goal of a "to be" list.  So here is the result of my study: T...

10 Things I love about Hannaford

So originally I was going to do this in sarcasm...but then decided that I could actually come up with 10 things (in no specific order) I like about my job. Even though being a cashier at a grocery store is not ideal, it's a job, and...well, you'll see. 1. Going on break with my dad sometimes. Because, you know, we work in the same store. It's pretty cool. 2. I love the people I work with soooooo much! Mainly the ones during the day, because I don't know any of the high school kids that work evenings, because I rarely work evenings. 3. Being the "party animal". nuff said. 4. Watching a cashier ID someone for alcohol, and him telling us that he doesn't even have a photo ID since his license was taken away for DWI. Yeah, maybe he should rethink his purchase... 5. Now when I hear the name of a vegetable, I automatically think of its PLU. Dates: 3047. Cabbage: 4069. Bananas: 4011. Tree Ripe Peaches: 4044. Eastern Peaches: 4403. Nectarines: 4378....

Summertime is...over?!

Today is one of my last few days at my parents' house before I head back to BYU for my senior year.  The long road of college finally has a light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks reachable!  But this time next year, if all goes according to plan, I will be married and living in Brazil.  The last couple days have made me look back on my summer and think about all that has happened... So, this is going to be a long post, mostly because of pictures that are going to help me tell my summer 2013 story.  I came back to NH in April after winter semester ended, stayed for about a week and a half, and then I went to Brazil for 5 1/2 weeks.  And while I was there, some wonderful things happened..... Renato proposed to me at the Recife Temple the day I got to Brazil (the first time we'd seen each other in over 9 months), and I said yes!  So (finally) we are officially engaged and planning a wedding for July 22 2014, in Brazil! Our rings :) We ...
