Oh! Happy day!

Since I received my mission call on Friday evening, I have had a little while to process it. I'm going to BRAZIL!!!!! I'm going to learn PORTUGUESE! It still hardly seems real that after this much time preparing for a mission, I finally know where I will be going, when I will be going, and what language I'll be speaking. It's a dream come true! I wouldn't have guessed Brazil if I were to venture a guess, despite the fact that 10% of all missionaries go there! And I'll be in the Sao Paulo East Mission...so cool! Sao Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world, and was founded in the 1500s. There's so much history there! This is going to be one of the best experiences of my life. Even though I'll be thousands of miles away from home in a place where I don't currently speak the language, I'm not nervous. Just excited. Granted, that may change as I'm on the plane to a foreign land, but for now, I'm content to be just excited. There are a few people I need to have long chats with in the near future! Carolee's dad served in the same mission, many years ago. My good friend Kevin served in the same mission only a few short years ago, and he refers to it as the Celestial Mission. I believe that! My friend Danny is currently serving there, which I think is pretty awesome! So yeah...my feelings on this include excitement and joy! And gratitude to have this opportunity. Wow!

I learned my first word in Portuguese yesterday: "encanador" means plumber. That's good to know. Also, "carne" means meat. Alex pointed that out to me and told me to remember that anytime someone asks me what my first name is. Because he calls me "Karne". I also remembered that one time when I was eating dinner at Tucanos, I made the comment that if I go to Brazil on my mission, I could be very happy there...because of the food. Haha, if only I knew then what I know now!

So yup. Happy happy happy!!! I have 4 1/2 months to prepare as much as I can before I go into the MTC on March 3. Plus 4 1/2 months to try to figure out what to do with all my time, seeing as I'll be done my online class at the end of next month....and then my friends leave in January for school. Good thing for the singles ward! :)

  1. Haha, the first thing I learned how to say was "Vou te matar" which means "I'm going to kill you." I was told I probably wouldn't use it very often. Maybe with companions. In the end, I never did. :)

Shades of Gray

Sometimes you think you've seen and heard it all. You look back on your life and think, "wow, I've been through everything." And you realize that you've been friendless, lost people close to you to the dreaded cancer, pretty much failed a class, missed work entirely, didn't know how you were going to pay your bills, been rejected by people you liked, felt lost and aimless, been rejected twice from the dream you've been dreaming, had the car die on you more times than you can count, and the list goes on. On the other hand, you've got amazing friends, the gospel in life, a positive and optimistic outlook, had the opportunity to be an EFY counselor, have an amazing family, travelled a ton, finally found what you want to do with your education, and the list goes on longer than the first. And then you think, again, "wow, I really HAVE been through everything!" And you think you know how to deal with anything that might come your way, because ...

Rocks Rock

Every rock tells a story.  Sometimes it is obvious what that story is: Over time, sediment built up and created this huge sedimentary rock.  This is typical of basically all the rocks in the west.  Look at the Grand Canyon for example...that's a perfect picture of sedimentary rock eroded over time and through water and such. Sometimes the story is a little harder to find, and you have you dig deeper and know some background info about that rock or rock system: In the Rocky Mountains, specifically the Wasatch range,  the rocks started as sedimentary rocks.  Layers built up over time.  As faults formed and gave out, these layers were bent, twisted, uplifted, and changed.  The layers are not horizontal anymore, and some are twisted around like this one.  It takes more time to explain this than just looking at it and knowing which layer came first. Sometimes unless you know more about the type of rock, the climate, and erosion processes, you c...

You make me smile

Stanford Larsen:  One of my dearest friends.  Also one of the few people in this world who never let me down...ever.  Every time I think back to memories with him, i can't help but smile.  He has left a smile on my heart forever. Watermelon always makes me smile.  No other explanation needed. My cats make me smile.  They purr and are happy kitties. Snow of course.  Snow snow snow!  Snow angels, snowballs, snowmen, snow forts, snow fights, snow shoveling, snowfall, snow! My family.  They're all my best friends.  I couldn't ask for a better family...ever. Mater.  Cars.  The music in the movie.  Watching the movie over and over again, on rainy or sunny days.  Lots of memories that go with this movie, too. Country.  Country music.  Country dancing.  Country movies.  Nashville.  Country stars.  Cowboys.  One in particular.  All of these things make me smile like I'd...
