Reminder

I am often reminded of how fragile life is, and in these moments, I become very pensive.  Like right now.  My last district leader on the mission was Elder Schenk...he is one of the best missionaries I know, and it was an honor to be able to serve with him, and he became a very good friend of mine!  He was scheduled to finish his mission this June, going home with the same group as President and Sister Moreira.
And in an instant, plans changed, lives changed.
Yesterday afternoon, he was going to cross a busy São Paulo street, as is not uncommon among missionaries!  He was on the corner, waiting to cross, and all of a sudden, a bus came...neither he nor the bus driver saw each other, and the bus hit him.  He went immediately to a hospital, but it was a hassle, and to make a really long story short, he was in critical condition, and it took about 4 hours of surgery for the doctors to figure out where to start.  He suffered severe head/brain trauma, and they were afraid there would be serious brain damage involved.  The Lord truly protects His missionaries, even in situations like this....the miracle is that while he is still unconscious and unable to see or hear, he did not suffer very much brain damage, and the doctors are today reconstructing his head.  The rest of his body does not even have a scratch on it.
I got this news this morning and began thinking immediately about how fragile life is, how quickly it can change.  Elder Schenk will finish his mission as soon as he is able to fly back to the USA, because it is unknown how long it'll take for him to recover.  I keep thinking about his family....his friends here.  How are they doing??  How are they taking this news?  There is no answer as to "why" this had to happen to such a good kid, why he has to go through this, and there is no one to blame.  This is hard on his family, both here and in Brazil, and those of us who are blessed to have him in our lives.
So if you are reading this, PLEASE keep him in your prayers...he and his family need all the help they can get right now.
And once again, I am reminded....don't take life or anyone for granted.  Things change in the blink of an eye.

  2. I am Elder Schenk's aunt. Life does take sudden turns, and we don't know why. What we do know is that God is in charge. He has already blessed our family with miracles. Britten is doing much better than expected. His surgeries have gone well. His parents are, hopefully, going to obtain the final approval for their emergency visas this morning in California and then they will be on a flight to Sao Paulo to be with Britten. The speed with which those visas are being obtained is no small miracle. We appreciate everyone's prayers in Elder Schenk's and his family's behalf. We know that God will heal him.

10 Things I love about Hannaford

So originally I was going to do this in sarcasm...but then decided that I could actually come up with 10 things (in no specific order) I like about my job. Even though being a cashier at a grocery store is not ideal, it's a job, and...well, you'll see. 1. Going on break with my dad sometimes. Because, you know, we work in the same store. It's pretty cool. 2. I love the people I work with soooooo much! Mainly the ones during the day, because I don't know any of the high school kids that work evenings, because I rarely work evenings. 3. Being the "party animal". nuff said. 4. Watching a cashier ID someone for alcohol, and him telling us that he doesn't even have a photo ID since his license was taken away for DWI. Yeah, maybe he should rethink his purchase... 5. Now when I hear the name of a vegetable, I automatically think of its PLU. Dates: 3047. Cabbage: 4069. Bananas: 4011. Tree Ripe Peaches: 4044. Eastern Peaches: 4403. Nectarines: 4378....

Shades of Gray

Sometimes you think you've seen and heard it all. You look back on your life and think, "wow, I've been through everything." And you realize that you've been friendless, lost people close to you to the dreaded cancer, pretty much failed a class, missed work entirely, didn't know how you were going to pay your bills, been rejected by people you liked, felt lost and aimless, been rejected twice from the dream you've been dreaming, had the car die on you more times than you can count, and the list goes on. On the other hand, you've got amazing friends, the gospel in life, a positive and optimistic outlook, had the opportunity to be an EFY counselor, have an amazing family, travelled a ton, finally found what you want to do with your education, and the list goes on longer than the first. And then you think, again, "wow, I really HAVE been through everything!" And you think you know how to deal with anything that might come your way, because ...

Rocks Rock!

So just out of curiosity, and because I had a couple minute before I have to head to work, I went on ebay and searched for a rock hammer. They are way cheaper than I thought they'd be! One of these days, I'm going to invest in a good one. But probably not until post-mission, as I technically won't need it until then anyway. Unless for some reason I take it to Alaska...hmm.... idears! Anyway, I took a geology test today, and it was a breeze. I love having a 4-credit class that I love and have an A in...partially because I love it, and partially because it takes some stress off of my math class, because this will balance it out. Though I'm not doing as badly in math as I thought I was! But i guess we'll see how this next test goes, which I think I am going to take on Saturday. It's going to be a busy weekend! James and I have quite the adventure planned for Saturday evening...just wait for pictures :) I hope it works out, because it'll be a hoot! ...
